Fuel tank position

I just replaced a sending unit on my 1998 Stratos 295 PE, but now I can't seem to put the fuel tank back where it was before I moved it. It looks like it is in position. There are no gaps behind the top of the tank and the wall. It is almost empty, so it is easy to slide around, but I have pushed and tapped with a rubber mallet and it will not go back far enough to re-mount the metal brackets that were holding it in place. I need about 1/4" to put them back on with the existing holes. Is there a trick to this or should I just drill out new holes?

If I drill new holes, is there an easy way to seal them?

Thanks for any help.

89 Stratos 285 Problems

I am having a number of problems with my 285 pro. I am new to bass boats so some of my questions may seem a little silly but here goes. Background of the boat. 1989 Stratos 285 pro with an 89 Evinrude 175xp with a 13.5x25 Shooter prop. With myself and my buddy in the boat I am able to achieve 5,000 rpms. I have never been able to do better then the 5,000. I am not worried about speed but I believe that the boat should perform better then that. The hole shot is terrible. The motor has been to a shop and had the compression checked and the motor is healthy.

1. Shouldn't this motor turn about 5500 rpms?
2. The hole shot is terrible.
3. When running WOT the boat is very difficult to handle in turns. This may be my inexperience with a bass boat but it seems to want to slide through turns. I did have a scare with the boat one time where it actually turned extremely sharp and I almost was not able to straighten it out again.

After reading so much about the motors sitting too low in the water I raised the motor on the boat one hole so that it is now in the second to hole from the bottom. The pin that stops the motor from trimming down all of the way is in the very bottom hole so that the motor sits at a negative angle with regards to the transom of the boat. Raising the motor did seem to help with the hole shot. I did notice that with the motor raised one bolt hole I am now getting a small rooster tail that I did not get before. Another thing I have noticed it that I can trim my motor very high and it does not cavitate. Any help that you guys can give me will be greatly appreciated. I am just not sure where to start i.e. jackplate, prop???

It is great saddness That the last Champion Boats are what appears now completely gone. The 198 and 210 Elite models have been dropped from the Stratos Line-Up. :(:(:(:mad::mad:

There were so MANY die-hard Champion Fans out there yet, I can't help but think that perhaps they in a way helped kill the boat. The bitterness that so many displayed over the whole "sticker" deal was so idiotic IMO.

RIP Champion Boats. :(

I have a a 2012 vlo with 150 Yam HPDI which I love both. she will run about 52 to 53 mph @ 5000rpm. The boat does not have a jackplate which I know it probably needs. Is this a little slower than to be expected? I'm not complaining and don't care to break any speed records just asking for comments. I have tried to break her in right and have not exceeded 5000 yet. Maybe barely for a second or two. What is a safe WOT without hurting anything. Thanks for your time.

Got to admit, I like it much better than Tin

I know everyone seems to need wiring diagrams and I hate to ask but I have a 1996 268 Stratus boat. I have looked at every available images I can find and non are legible enough to view. I have the owners manual but it is way to vague. I troubleshot the aerators and solved that problem but the front bow light and dash lights will not work through the console. I checked continuity at the bow panel and everything seems to have good connections but the grey/black wire that feeds the bow light. I turned power switch on and flipped to the stern and it works but when switching to Nav with the panel switch the light will not come on. I checked voltage and I'm getting nothing but the continuity is fine. I then went to console and checked there with no luck. I no the power switch on console works because the live wells come on. I take it the fuse block is the panel above the steering wheel but not sure. I checked inline fuse at the battery and it is good along with 13 volts on the battery. Does anyone no where a good place is to buy or retrieve a detailed diagram? I don't mind paying for it because the next step is to pull new wires and add another switch. I have checked connections and they seem to be in tack but I just cleaned them with electrical cleaner! Any help on this matter would be very much appreciated!

Thanks,

Justin

Stratos Boat History

Earl Bentz, the founder of Stratos Boats, opened the company September, 1983 in Old Hickory, Tennessee.

Earl grew up in boating, cutting his teeth working for his uncle at a his boating business in South Carolina as an assembly and servicing man. He also assisted in the pits at the boat races his uncle ran. Earl also got caught up in boat racing himself at this time. Tragically Earl broke his back at Lake Eufaula while racing. Once he recovered, he was asked to unite with Mercury Racing in 1973 and worked with them for eight years.

The bass boat craze was at an all time high and in 1975 Earl took a job with Hydra-Sport in Nashville Tennessee. He started in the research and development division and then accepted a position in customer service, finally moving to sales and marketing. Earl advanced to the position of Vice President/General Manager in 1981. That career move spelled the end to Earl’s involvement in Team Mercury racing.

Earl resigned from Hydra-Sport In September of 1983 to form his own boat manufacturing company, Stratos Boats, Inc. Although the move was risky, he said to himself, “What else can be done to make bass boats more user-friendly?” – That thought was his motivation to form the company.

Being inventive, Earl first did away with fuses and substituted circuit breakers. At the time trolling motors were rigged with10 gauge wire. At the time the boats were advancing as well as the trolling motors. Because of Earl’s inventiveness Stratos became the 1st company to usher in a six gauge wire standard. Due to Earl’s creativity and invention, Stratos quickly became a leader in the fiberglass sportfishing boat industry. Earl’s 201 model was the Stratos flagship and dominated tournament competition. Stratos created various models ranging from 16′ to 20′ to suit various fishing needs.

Earl sold the Stratos Company In 1987 to the Outboard Motor Corporation but he stayed as the president of the company and was instrumental in the founding of Javelin Boats under the OMC banner.

At the time, OMC was acquiring boat building businesses in an attempt to dominate out-the-door hull sales in an attempt to gain market share from the much bigger Brunswick (Mercury). At the time, Stratos seemed to dominate the boat building industry with offices then located in Murfreesboro, Tenn.

During the late ‘90s, OMC concentrated on purchasing technology targeting the fuel injection competition. Stratos motor design, known as Fichts, was plagued with difficulties. Most affected were the 150-175 horsepower models. Attempts were made to remedy the situation, however with mixed results.

Due to the burden of oppressing warranty work expenses, OMC reluctantly accepted an offer by George Soros to prop up the Stratos, injecting funds into the faltering company. Consequently, ownership of OMC belonged to Soros. Soros only enjoyed a brief stay of power and made terrible management decisions that only benefited himself and not the company, consequently OMC fell into bankruptcy.

As a result of the Ficht horsepower warranty issues combined with OMC-held boat builders loyalty to OMC,

Stratos Wiring Diagram

I have been looking for high quality wiring diagrams for quite some time now, and today I finally found them. (My boat is a 93 Stratos 201PRO XL with a Johnson 200GT).

These are essentially the same diagrams that are located on this board elswhere. However, the ones on this board are all in .jpg format that when printed on letter size paper, everything is so blurry you can hardly read them.

The ones I got my hands on today are in .pdf form and are of excellent quality. In fact, I printed all of them on 11 x 17 paper and they don't show any of the blurry effect you get when you print the .jpg version.

Anyway, I tried to upload them to the board, but it wont let me because they exceed the size requirements of the board. There are 7 diagrams total, the largest being 69k in size.

If anyone wants a copy, send me a message with your email address and ask nicely for them. Bettter yet, if one of the administrators of this board can give me a shout, maybe I can send them and they can post them as a sticky so everyone can download them.

I only ask for credit for uploading them, nothing else. This board has been a help to me and I would like to return the favor.
